Maria Nilaya was started at the initiative of the Superior General Rev Mother Genevieve Castelino who purchased the land and Srs Gemma Pinto, Fridseville Menezes and Carmine D Souza as the pioneers. This place was marked as Gollarahatti where kuruba community was rearing the sheep. These people did not have sense of health and hygiene, were living in small thatched huts. Initially Sisters visited these people in their huts by giving them awareness on health hygiene and introduced alternative occupations like sericulture, tailoring and horticulture etc. Sisters also did the farming and health care activities.
In 1995 Gnanbodhini High school was shifted to Maria Nilaya premises from Holy Family premises. In 1996 the existing farm house was turned out to be the residence of the Sisters which was erected as the religious community.
Along with Education, Pastoral apostolate is also emphasized by taking active part in all the parish activities at St Francis of Assisi Church, Kengeri.
